Choose your appointmentElectrolysis removes unwanted hair one follicle at a time, and it is the only hair removal method the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recognizes as permanent. Because it does not rely on pigment, it works on every hair color, including the gray, white, blond and red hairs that laser cannot treat, and on all skin tones.
Sessions are booked by time, from 5 minutes ($49) to 60 minutes ($189), so you pay only for the time your hairs need. ROW 89 is at 219A East 89th Street on the Upper East Side, about five minutes on foot from the Q train at 86th Street and Second Avenue.

A very fine probe, about the width of a hair, slides into the natural opening of the follicle. A small electrical current treats the growth cells at the root, and the loosened hair is lifted out with tweezers. Each follicle is treated on its own, which makes electrolysis precise enough for brows and small areas. Treated follicles stop producing hair over a course of sessions, although new follicles can become active later, especially with hormonal changes.

How sessions work
Hair grows in cycles, and only hairs in the active growth phase respond well to treatment. Hairs that are resting come to the surface later, so it takes a series of sessions to reach every follicle in an area. The number of sessions varies with how many hairs there are, how coarse they are and what is driving the growth: a few chin hairs may need only short visits, while a full upper lip or hormonal hair takes longer. Many clients start with short sessions every week or two, then come in less often as regrowth slows.
Choose your session length when you book. A 5- or 15-minute session covers a few stray hairs; 30 to 60 minutes suits larger areas. If you are not sure, start short and your provider will suggest a plan at the first visit.
What to expect
- During treatment. Most people feel a brief heat or sting with each hair. The upper lip is usually more sensitive than the chin.
- Afterward. Redness and small raised bumps around treated follicles are common and usually settle within a few hours to a day.
- Aftercare. Keep the area clean, avoid touching it, and skip makeup, saunas and intense workouts for about 24 hours. Use sunscreen on treated skin.
- Before your visit. Let the hair grow out for a few days so it can be seen, and do not pluck or wax beforehand. Tell your provider about medications, pregnancy, a pacemaker or metal implants, and any history of keloid scarring.
Electrolysis vs. laser hair removal
Laser treats a whole area at once and works best on dark hair, so it is efficient for legs, underarms or the bikini line. Electrolysis treats one hair at a time and works on any hair color, so it suits small areas, light or gray hairs and whatever remains after a laser series. Many clients combine the two: laser first for dark hair, then electrolysis for the rest.

Electrolysis questions
Is electrolysis permanent?
Electrolysis is the only hair removal method the FDA recognizes as permanent. Most follicles need more than one treatment, and new hairs can still grow from follicles that were never treated, especially with hormonal changes, so some people book occasional maintenance sessions.
How many sessions will I need?
It depends on the area, how many hairs there are, how coarse they are and what is causing the growth. Because hair grows in cycles, plan on a series of sessions; your provider will suggest a schedule after your first visit.
How much does electrolysis cost?
Electrolysis is priced by time: $49 for 5 minutes, $89 for 15, $129 for 30, $159 for 45 and $189 for 60 minutes. A few chin hairs often need only a short session.
Can electrolysis treat gray or blond hair?
Yes. Electrolysis does not depend on pigment, so it treats gray, white, blond and red hair as well as dark hair. That is the main reason clients choose it over laser for those hairs.
